Orthodontics in Milton

There’s no denying that a straighter smile is healthier and easier to care for. Properly aligned teeth can reduce your risk of problems like TMJ disorder, tooth decay, and even gum disease.

How to get your teeth into the perfect alignment may be the biggest choice to make: should you go with conventional braces, or opt for a removable design such as Invisalign?

Traditional Braces: The Pros and Cons

Conventional braces are appropriate for just about any age, whether you’re an adult with a fully developed smile or a younger child who is still losing a tooth here and there. Although traditional orthodontics are usually made of hypoallergenic metal, there are now options for cosmetic or ceramic brackets that blend in better with your teeth.

Advantages of choosing fixed braces include:

  • A treatment that’s always with you; you won’t have to remember to change out aligners (or risk your student misplacing theirs during school lunch)
  • Predictability for mild to severe misalignment cases
  • Appropriate for younger patients who need interceptive treatments that accommodate proper tooth eruption patterns

Disadvantages of fixed orthodontics are primarily related to aesthetics, comfort, diet, and oral hygiene. They take more time to clean around each day, so dedicated home care is essential. Choosing appropriate food is key, so that fixed appliances aren’t accidentally broken or pulled off of the teeth by hard or sticky foods (apples, steak, taffy, gum, etc.)

Invisalign Orthodontics: Clear, Removable, but Right for Everyone?

The majority of our Milton Invisalign patients choose these braces because the translucent aligners are essentially “invisible” to other people, and they can be removed for more freedom to eat, brush, and floss.

With Invisalign, you can:

  • Stick to a normal oral hygiene routine, without any extra supplies or tools to clean around your teeth
  • Enjoy fewer and shorter maintenance appointments during your course of treatment
  • Take advantage of eating a wider range of foods than conventional orthodontic patients
  • Have a truly invisible/removable option for important social settings such as meetings, dinner dates, or other events
  • Wear custom fitted appliances that are less irritating to the cheeks and lips

Unfortunately, Invisalign also calls for strict dedication on the part of you or your teen. If you feel that it may be challenging to remember to wear the aligners for a minimum of 20 hours per day and change them out as prescribed, then a fixed braces option may be more appropriate. You know yourself (and your teen) better than anyone: are you up to the task of overseeing your orthodontic treatment at home?
