If you’ve been putting off that filling you know you need so bad, there might be a logical explanation: you just don’t like getting a shot. Or perhaps, you don’t like being numb for hours afterward.
Dental injections are what makes it possible to numb your teeth so that they can be worked on comfortably; but if the injection itself is what’s making you uncomfortable, there’s a solution: The Wand.
What is The Wand?
The Wand is a digital, single tooth anesthesia delivery system. That means we can use it to numb a small portion of your mouth, without leaving half of it feeling completely numb for the rest of the day.
Because it’s digital, The Wand slowly and comfortably injects anesthetic using precisely measured pressure. This significantly reduces the pain or “sting” that most people associate with getting an injection of anesthetic. While most people think the pain of injections comes from the needle, it’s actually the flow of the anesthetic that usually causes the discomfort. Because The Wand makes sure the flow is steady, this takes the variable of discomfort out of the anesthesia equation.
For Sensitive Areas in Your Mouth
Thanks to what many people refer to as the “magic pen,” Dr. Sarna is able to help patients with particularly sensitive teeth get the treatment they need. If you’ve had a bad experience in the past or struggled with your dentist not being able to get your tooth numb all of the way, The Wand makes it easier to pinpoint and numb just one or two teeth at a time. We can do this because it targets different nerves than a conventional injection, leaving the rest of your teeth free of anesthesia.
What to Expect
During your dental appointment, Dr. Sarna will still have topical anesthetic jelly rubbed on the tissues next to your tooth that is going to be numbed. Even though the needle used on The Wand is extremely small, we take every precaution to limit possible discomfort.
Next, the handheld pen-like device is applied to the tooth, near the tip of the root. As The Wand slowly infiltrates anesthetic into the localized area, your tooth becomes numb without the areas around it doing the same.
Dr. Sarna will check to ensure that your tooth is numb before starting to work on it. If for any reason you feel sensitivity, you can slowly lift your hand during the procedure to signal that you need a moment to speak with him. Most of our patients find that The Wand is so convenient and comfortable, that they wish they hadn’t put their treatment off for so long!
