For most teens, the thought of getting braces can be somewhat unsettling. They are concerned about their appearance and how the braces are going to affect their smile. They can also be upset because they may not be able to eat all of their favorite foods and have to adjust their brushing and flossing habits.
All of these concerns can be further complicated and seem much more significant for your teen because along with having to get braces, they are transitioning into young adults. To them, having to wear braces for a few years is the equivalent of “forever”. As a parent, it is beneficial to talk about what concerns your teen has about getting braces. As they are talking to you, let them explain everything to you first, before responding.
It can be helpful to grab a notepad and write down their concerns, too. This way you can easily refer back to each point they made. In addition, if they mentioned concerns about how the braces are installed, the “stories” they heard from other friends with braces about how painful they were, and others related to the actual orthodontic treatment, it is best to schedule a consultation appointment with their Milton dentist.
During this appointment, let your teen bring up their concerns with their dentist, first, and refer to your notes if your teen forgets to bring up a question or concern. Their dentist will answer their questions, provide details about how the braces will be installed and cared for throughout the treatment, which can help alleviate many of their concerns. Additionally, their dentist will discuss what options they have available for braces: Insignia Damon or traditional.
Insignia Damon braces are custom made brackets with either metal or porcelain connectors. They help move the teeth faster and more comfortably than traditional braces. However, if you teen wants the traditional braces with the colored rubber bands, that is also an option.
At the end of this appointment, if your teen is still hesitant about having modern Insignia Damon braces or traditional ones installed, you may want to consider Invisalign® instead. Invisalign® is a special treatment option that uses clear plastic aligners worn over the teeth to realign and straighten them.
One of the benefits of Invisalign® is most of your teen’s friend will not even notice they are wearing the appliance, which can address concerns about their smile. In addition, they do not have to worry about not being able to eat their favorite foods. At meal and snack times, they simply remove the plastic aligners, eat, and then brush their teeth before putting them back in.
About every two weeks, they will transition to a new set of plastic aligners as their teeth are slowly straightened. They will repeat this process throughout their treatment period. Whether your teen chooses Insignia Damon braces, traditional ones, or Invisalign® they all provide the same great results.
